Nursing Leadership

Introduction

Today, with advent of new technologies in the field of healthcare, it is found that the expectations of the patients have increased from the healthcare organizations. Hence, it is a moral responsibility of the top-level management to deploy appropriate staff and working approach to exceed the expectations of the patients in a given environment (O'Dowd, 2013).

Also, the nursing staff needs to deploy innovative working style and leadership abilities to manage multiple tasks at the workplace. The Human Resources (HR) department is already focusing on improving the work skills of the employees in a given environment. However, the nursing leader also needs to provide instructions to the other staff so that they can perform as per the needs and expectations of the organization in a given working environment.

This report will thereby analyze how the leadership skills of the nursing staff will help them improve their working efficacy in the organization Second, it will also determine the psychosocial relations with the employees so that the leaders can work with them accordingly, can motivate them, and thereby make sure to complete the assigned tasks within the given timeframe and as per the needs of the organization.

Nursing Care

Today, the role of the nursing staff has increased in a given environment. It is found that they need to perform several functions and thereby serve as per the directions of the top-level management of the organization. The nurses need to determine the type of treatment options required for the different patients in a given environment (O'Dowd, 2013).

It will thereby make sure of delivering the desired care services for the patients in a given working environment. They also need to interact with the patients, carry out effective communication to understand their needs, provide them with all types of physical and emotional support, assist them in overcoming the healthcare issues, carry out other functions of the organization, and subsequently achieve desired objectives of nursing care in a given working environment (Johnson, 2015).

Further, the nurses also need to follow the different nursing principles in their daily work routines and also overcome internal conflicts at their workplace. It will thereby make sure of overcoming the key challenges and achieve desired productivity levels in the organization.

Importance of Leadership

There are different types of leadership model that can be implemented in the organization. However, it will depend on the leader to choose from the given styles based on the needs and executions of the organization.

The nursing leader considering the increased challenges in the present working scenario need to plan the work schedules, organize the daily work tasks, and make effective decisions that will allow them to complete the tasks within the given timeframe (Bisognano & Schummers, 2014). Further, they need to cooperate with other staff members and departments of the organization to overcome the major challenges in a given work environment.

The nursing staff needs to assist other nurses to solve the problems of the workplace; it will thereby save time and other efforts in competing those tasks (Bisognano & Schummers, 2014). Further, the nursing leader also needs to collect the feedback from the patients so that they can identify the gaps in the current work processes and accordingly deploy new strategies to overcome them.

The nursing leader also needs to provide a direction to all the staff members so that it will bridge the gaps and allow them to perform as per the needs of the organization in a given challenging work environment (Bisognano & Schummers, 2014).

Relationship between Authentic Leadership, Leader-Member Exchange and Employees' Psychological Capital

One of the key leadership styles is the authentic leadership style wherein the leader will be defining the key purposes, will focus on values, will build relationships based on trust, will be focusing more on self-discipline so that the employees do not get diverted, and also will be taking decisions based on the mission of the organization (Simoens et al., 2013). It will thereby allow him to connect with the employees in a better way.

Further, it will also make sure that they are focusing on the aspects of psychological needs of the employees in the organization. The employees will remain motivated and continue to work in a given organization provided that they are motivated on their different motivation factors in a given environment.

It is due to these reasons that some of the researchers have even recommended to deploy leader-member exchange theory that will allow more incidence to the employees in a given working environment. It will also allow them to take decisions and will thereby improve their performance in a given working environment (Ziebarth, 2014). Further, it will also allow them to improve the job satisfaction levels and commitment levels of the employees in a given organization.

Building Psychological Capital of Employees

Today, the organizations need to look out for the factors and work approaches that will help them deliver better performance in the organization. However, the top-level management along with the HR department of the organization need to focus on four major types of capital that will improve the current work processes and will also improve their working efficiency in the organization (Ziebarth, 2014).

It is thereby important to focus on the psychical aspects of the employees such as - confidence, hope, optimism, motivation, and resilience that will allow them to have better working relationships in a given healthcare organization (Ziebarth, 2014). Further, the HR team needs to train the working staff on different modules, leadership approaches, management techniques, and other knowledge aspects that will allow them to perform better in the organization.

Further, the nursing staff also needs to get trained on the technological modules so that they can remain connected with other departments as well as will be able to improvise on their communications in a given working environment (Ziebarth, 2014). They will thereby be able to overcome the gaps and subsequently improve the working efficiency in a given environment.

Emotions affecting Employee Performance

The employees while working in the organization will be expecting support from the top-level management of the organization. It is the responsibility of the senior management and the key leaders to take into account the major psychological values such as - family dynamics, living situation, health status, functional working approach, motivation, degree of autonomy, authorized to take decisions, holistic approach to care services, and also retirement planning (Howard, 2014).

Thus, the role of the HR department is vital in such cases as they need to motivate the staff on these factors, support them from the psychological perspective, provide them different types of support, and thereby exceed their expectations in a given working environment. It will thereby allow them to perform on the assigned tasks as per the expectations of the senior management in the organization.

Also, the top-level management needs to monitor the different strategies implemented in this direction and suggest recommendations wherever required (Howard, 2014). It will thereby improvise the future outcomes in a given operational environment.

Analyzing Leadership approach of the Nursing Leader

In one of the case scenarios, a nurse leader was interviewed to gather information related to nursing leadership in the organization. During the discussion, she mentioned that today, the nurses in a given working environment are required to focus on different aspects such as - personal skillset, managing the other staff members, focusing on interpersonal effectiveness, deploying care services as per the needs of the patients, implementing technological modules for the different tasks and activities, and also managing communications in an effective way (Wu et al., 2018).

It will thereby allow them to perform as per the needs of the organization. In a given working environment, it was found that she was adhering to the principles of quality management, environmental care, and effective decision-making that allowed her to help all the stakeholders of the organization.

In addition, she also reviewed the current work practices, determined the gaps, implemented specific leadership model, and thereby took steps to overcome the major challenges of the organization in a given environment (Ziebarth, 2014). She also implemented team-based working approach to overcome internal conflicts and supported rest of the staff in completing their tasks within the given timeframe and as per the planned schedules within the organization.

Working with different types of Employees

Today, to address the challenges of the workplace and also to overcome the internal resistance of the employees in a new working environment, the nursing leaders are recommended to deploy change management models (Ziebarth, 2014). It will thereby provide them overcome these hurdles in a given working environment in the healthcare organization.

It will also motivate the employees since this will benefit the employees a lot from the working perspective. In some of the cases, the leaders recommended to deploy participative leadership style in the organization. It will thereby facilitate them with the communication, share information and knowledge about the tasks, take the best possible decision, synthesize all the information available and process them, and thereby encourage the followers to perform on their respective assigned tasks (Villarruel, Bigelow, & Alvarez, 2014).

It will thereby allow the leaders to change the working approach and also achieve desired objectives in a given working environment. However, the leaders need to monitor the performance of the staff and accordingly suggest them with the new recommendations to improve their future outcomes.

Improving Workplace Environment

To improve the workplace environment, the role of the nursing leader is important in the healthcare organization. The top-level management needs to first communicate the vision and mission of the organization. The leaders will thereby be formatting key strategies for all the departments in a given working environment (Villarruel, Bigelow, & Alvarez, 2014).

Further, they will be taking decisions for the betterment of the staff so that they can complete them within the assigned timeframe. In addition, the leader’s area also recommends to work on skills such as values of the organization, ethics, accountability, team-working, autonomy, engagement, and communication; it will make sure of overcoming the workplace challenges and also allow employees to have a flexible working approach in the organization.

Today, with advent of new technologies, the staff need to get trained on the new working modules in the organization (Villarruel, Bigelow, & Alvarez, 2014). It will subsequently improve the working efficiency of the employees and will also improve the productivity levels of all the debarments of a given healthcare institution.

Recommendations

Today, with increased challenges in the work environment and with increased expectations of the patients in a given healthcare institution, the leaders need to analyze the situation first and thereby deploy a particular leadership style in the organization. The different types of leadership styles include - autonomy, democratic, transformational, collective, and participative; however, considering the present needs of the organization, a leader needs to implement transformational leadership style in a given nursing environment (Villarruel, Bigelow, & Alvarez, 2014).

They need to identify the major challenges faced by the patients, provide all types of support to both the patient and their family members, conduct screening from the medical perspective, follow the instructions of the clinician and accordingly provide them with required care services in a given environment (Coben & Weeks, 2014).

They also need to communicate with the patients to take a review of the current processes and working approach in the organization. The leader also needs to train the staff on different functional modules and technological platforms to increase their working efficiency in a given environment. It will thereby allow them to achieve desired objectives for the organization (Coben & Weeks, 2014).

Conclusion

This report discusses how different leadership styles will allow the nursing leader to perform the desired tasks of the organization in a given working environment. It was found that the nursing leadership style as per the literature review and the nursing leadership approach adopted by the nurse leader are similar since they are aiming to achieve desired level of efficiency in the organization.

Further, they are planning the different procedures, focusing on overcoming the gaps, improving communication, assisting other staff members, collaborating with other departments to bridge the gaps, focusing on technological work modules, and thereby making sure of achieving desired outcomes for the healthcare institution (White et al., 2014).

This report also covered an interview of the nurse leader and determined her working approach in the organization. There is also a need to deploy performance analysis mechanisms through which defend outcomes can be measured; the leaders can accordingly change the strategies for future improvement in the organization.
