Essay is about America as Policeman of the World and the primary purpose of the America’s Cold War technique

Home, - America as Policeman of the World

The United States holds a global position of unprecedented and unusual dominance, often referred to as an empire or hegemony. For most Americans, over the past few decades, the global position has inspired dreams of international influence and a sense of triumph. These aspects have led the United States to assume “a Policeman of the World” role where the whole world expects the country to intervene in international matters. By assembling international power, the nation has won security for its citizens, uncontested supremacy, and international standing as a superpower. It is for this reason that this paper argues that America’s policing role created during the Cold War has primarily been used as a means of securing its economic and national interests, as well as those of its allies.

The Cold War ended years ago, and yet the United States is coping with immense social problems and a colossal debt to protect Japan and Germany, two rich countries that are currently facing no imminent danger. Why? The answer lies in the ideologies and beliefs of the foreign elite who believe that the United States needs to assert international political and economic control. When the Cold War ended, Clinton’s administration developed a fundamental reassessment of the national security needs of the country (Schultz, 2014). The analysis identified that the global interests of the United States depended on its ability to establish a full-proof military force in the international scene by investing heavily in military resources and development and sending soldiers to different regions like Europe and Asia.

The primary purpose of America’s Cold War technique was to formulate and sustain “an international liberal economic regime” or a capitalistic order. The U.S. policymakers understood that for this to materialize they needed to control most of the international trade processes. Hence, the country started to supply Japan and Western Europe with massive amounts of financial aid through various initiatives, such as the Dodge Plan in Japan and the Marshall Plan in Europe (Spykman, 2017). The United States also focused on a more ambitious project: controlling and transforming international relations.

The interventions from America, over the decades, have only fuelled the tension in the international environment. This is evident from the fact that nothing positive amounted from Korean, Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq Wars. The Iraq War would not have occurred if the United States had not supported Saddam Hussein’s idea of using chemical weapons against Iran. Also, the Afghanistan War would not have emerged if America did not engage the radical Islamists in Afghanistan when they wanted to kick out the Soviet Union (Schultz, 2014). The United States supposedly safeguards the planet from pirates and shoots down civilian planes in the process without offering any apology. A good illustration can be seen from the Iran Air Flight 655 that was gunned down by the U.S. missile cruiser killing all the 290 persons on board, including the kids.

There are numerous examples of the “fatherly role’ of the United States in conflict resolution to protect economic interests. For instance, the United States has been openly involved in Middle East’s conflicts and treaties so that it can continue to tap into the oil fields in the region. America served as the superpower moderator in the Israeli-Palestine Accord in 1993 to end the Six-Day War over a territorial dispute (Mandelbaum, 2015). In the present day international conflicts, the United States continues to face terroristic threats and the nuclear war threat from Korea. Following the 9/11 attacks, America used a firm hand to control the areas that had suspicious terrorist activities (Tarzi, 2014). The policing role of the United States continues to be tested by the possibility of a nuclear war between North Korea and the U.S. The world might be in the brink of the Third World War, courtesy of the intervention of the United States in South Korea and the country’s increased spending on military weapons.

Proponents may argue that the country has assisted in solving many international dilemmas, such as Bush’s interventions in Kuwait, Kosovo, and Afghanistan and Obama’s Iran Deal. The country also provides military resources and assistance to international peace-keeping organizations like NATO and the UN. Most importantly, the proponents may assert that the United States is simply following the guidelines provided by its Founding Fathers to pursue a moral obligation to other nations and promote the good of other people and nations. But it is evident from the above analysis, that the country’s interventions serve the underlying purpose of protecting its superiority and economic interests.

The notion of preserving the sovereignty and national interests of the United States guides the actions of millions of Americans in the workplace who always come to the defense of their country regardless of whether the leaders do the appropriate thing or not. A good example can be seen from how Hollywood manifests the heroic nature of the United States in fighting terrorism and solving international conflicts. Additionally, a considerable portion of Americans believes that it is appropriate for the country to invest in military action and use totalitarian efforts to curb terrorism.
