Analysis of various factors that influence communication process in health and social care

In health and social care organisations, the medical practitioners are required to understand that there might several factors which affect communication among two individuals. Some of the factors are mentioned as follows,

Sensory deprivation

This is one of the factors which influence communication as the individual who has impairment and is unable to communicate their message to others. It results either in lack of transparency which then might result in trust issues.


 Most of the time, it becomes quite difficult for the care users to understand the technical and medical terminologies utilised by the medical practitioners (Nair, 2019). This again either makes it difficult for the care user to understand or they get frightened by misinterpreting the same.

Foreign language

In a healthcare setting, when a medical practitioner speaks a language which is not understood by the rest of the workforce, then the communication is of no use. In this regard, it can be mentioned that the management of healthcare organisations need to ensure that each of their workforce uses formal language that is understood by everyone.

Cultural differences

Communication becomes difficult when similar things are different in meaning in two different cultures (De Moissac and Bowen, 2019). Therefore, it can be said that health and social needs to train its medical practitioners such that they communicate maintaining cultural diversity and also the norms of the care unit.


Distress and anxiety are also considered to be one of the factors influencing communication. This is because individual finds it difficult to communicate when they are distressed or anxious (Leaveyet al., 2020). They might also possess difficulty in expressing their opinions and thus, it is needed to be ensured that none of the medical practitioner is distressed due to their working hours or work pressure.

Discussion of the main barriers to communication and how these can be overcome

Aggression and cultural differences might be the two main barriers to communication within the health and social care unit. According to De Devitiiset al. (2018), aggression is considered to be an unpleasant behaviour and is caused due to variety of factors like ill mental health, substance misuse or personality problem. It is an emotion which is out of control. If the medical practitioners working in different health and social care units acquire this emotion, then they might be dominating the care users. This thereby results in poor quality of care service provision by the medical practitioners. On the other hand, cultural differences might result in lack of understanding of other's language which again acts as a barrier in communication (Yimeret al., 2020). In the perspective of health and social care, it can be mentioned that the medical practitioners from different cultural backgrounds might find it difficult to communicate adequate message to their colleagues or the care users. This again results in inefficient healthcare practices.

Considering the above barriers to communication within the health and social care, it management might take the responsibility to ensure each of the medical practitioner is well aware of the regional or the formal language which is understood by everyone. Otherwise, training can be provided to the medical practitioners for enhancing their knowledge regarding regional language or the formal one (Bachmanet al., 2018). Consequently, the barrier of aggression can be overcome with assertion. Increased rate of meditation might help the medical practitioners to acquire the assertive skills so that they are able to politely handle their care users. This is considered beneficial for attaining smooth and transparent communication with others in the healthcare unit.

Identification of a variety of alternative means of communication utilised with Health and Social care users with special requirements

Some of the alternative forms of communication utilised within health and social care to foster care services to care users with impairments. As an instance, a care user with visual impairment might make use of senses to understand messages delivered or written. These care users generally make use of Braille for understanding the alphabets written in a document. On the other hand, people with learning difficulties are made understood through makaton which is a mode of communication using sign and symbol (Medina-Peruchaet al., 2017). Apart from the above mentioned forms, lip reading is also a form of communication which is generally used with the care users with hearing impairment. It has been learnt from the research works of Tennantet al. (2017) that deaf people are able to interpret the message conveyed by others appropriately with their capability of lip reading. Caldicott principles are considered to be the fundamental principles that are to be obeyed by the health and social care establishments so that they are effectually able to protect the information of their respective care users. According to Dalmaet al. (2020), Caldicott principles ensures that importance information related to the personal or medical record of their care user are to be used only during requirement. In compliance to this principle, the medical practitioners in health and social care units are required to preserve the information of their care users so that they are adequately able to acquire the trust of their care users. Based on the research article of Chanet al. (2017), it has been identified that there are some individuals who do not share their problem out of the fear that they might be judged. Therefore, it is important for the medical practitioners to maintain confidentiality with their care users.
