Current Trends and Directions for Health Care Delivery in United States of America

(i)            Trend: 1:  Outcomes are not in proportion to the actual expenses being incurred in the health care delivery – due to managed care characteristics.

Health care delivery in United States of America is very unique and it is pioneer in the world in terms of the per capita investment the nation is making in this direction. Actually United States of America spends more than any other country in the world for the health care of the citizens of America.  However the actual outcomes are not in proportion to the investments it is making in the system. One of the major causes of the same is the inherent deficiency in the actual managed care in the country. The actual managed health care in the country is not comprehensive, apart from within the four walls of the hospital; the health care systems will not bother about the well being of the patients. The managed care lacks the spirit to think beyond the four walls of the hospital and it lacks the necessary holistic spirt to look at full profile of the patient.

(ii)           Trend: 2: Focus of the health care delivery is more on the financial management not on the actual quality of the health care – Due to managed care characteristics.

As per the profile and nature of the managed health care in united states of America at present, there is  more and more emphasis being perceived in the financial aspect and financial management of the health care rather than the actual quality of the health care; this inherent nature of the managed health care is considered to be the reason for the increased costs of the health  care delivery in the current trends and further it is also considered to be the reason for no correlation of the outcomes of the delivery model with the actual costs of the health care.

(iii)          Trend: 3: Patient now can avail flexibility in choosing the preferential service provider – Enabled due to the managed health care flexibility induced to the health care delivery.

Another important aspect of the health care delivery at present is including the managed health care (Smith & Goodwin, 2017) to enhance the versatility and options in health care receiving in general. For example enabling preferred provider organization has yielded options for the patient to choose his own preferential service provider and also now he has option to select the right financial plan from several options there available in the market. Managed health care and its conceptual versatility enabled these flexibilities in health care delivery at present.

Reflection: The impacts of the managed health care are both positive as well negative on the health care delivery models and the practices.

Positive implications:

Managed health care ideally is a good instrument to bring out the health care changes and improvements sought after by citizens. The key positive aspects are the health care service availability to wide section of the people like never before.

Negative Aspects:

The negative aspects include increased costing and fall in the correlation between the quality and the actual costing of the services.

Scope for improvement:

A comprehensive renovation of the managed health care system (Obama, 2016) to address these gaps, will improve the benefits of the health care service and health care service delivery practices much effectively.
